Joe Flacco’s Rookie Year
The season is over for local fans who were rooting for
the Eagles and Ravens to win their respective games and
become the champions of their divisions. January 18th was
not a “Super Sunday” for the fans.
Joe Flacco however, became the first rookie quarterback
in NFL history to win two playoff games, but was
unable to become the first rookie quarterback to go to the
Super Bowl. His first year with the Baltimore Ravens was
spectacular and exceeded expectations of a rookie’s success
as a starter from the first through the final game of the season.
Congratulations on all your accomplishments this year, and
Joe, no longer will you be addressed as a “rookie”. Good
Luck next season.
Introducing World Series
Champions’ Ballgirl
For the past two years I have been living every baseball
fans dream; having a front seat on a major league diamond
witnessing the best baseball players of my generation take
part in America’s favorite past time. And this year I was
fortunate enough to be part of a championship that the city of Philadelphia has been waiting for since 1983. Ever
since Brad Lidge struck out Eric Hinske to remain perfect in
Game 5 of the World Series my life has been a bit of a
welcomed whirlwind. Along with the numerous events
and appearances that the Ballgirls have done I am also
completing my senior year at Drexel University majoring
in Health and Science.
When I first got word that I had been chosen to be a
Philadelphia Phillies Ballgirl I really didn’t know what to
expect. I honestly thought that the job entailed just being on
the field a few games a month, but I quickly learned that
there is so much more to the job. One of my favorite aspects
about being a ballgirl is that we have our own softball team!
We travel around the tri-state area playing various teams to
raise money for Phillies Charities. If we’re not playing
softball or we’re not on the field you can catch us walking
around Citizens Bank Park collecting recyclable because this
past season the Phillies decided to go Green!
Between playing softball, going Green and being on the
field I have collected countless memories that will stay with
me forever. One in particular sticks out in my mind and I
have a feeling that many people may feel the same way. My
fondest memory of being a Philadelphia Phillies Ballgirl is
the Parade down Broad Street. I had the opportunity to be
in the parade and celebrate the championship with the city
and I was blown away. Many people have asked me what it
was like and I honestly have trouble finding the words to give
that day justice. I always say it was one of those “you had to
be there” moments to fully understand the atmosphere.
Hopefully there will be another trip down Broad Street in
2009 and I will be able to explain more in depth what it was
like to see a city come together and celebrate.

Teresa Leonhart Godwin Phelps, class of 1962, traveled
from out of state to attend Alumni Day on October 25th. In
the rotunda Teresa and many guests witnessed the Ring of
Honor Inductees’ ceremony. That night, after a two hour
rain delay, the Phillies beat Tampa Bay in the third game of
the world series. Teresa’s son-in-law, Jamie Moyer, was the
game winning pitcher.
